Do you have an emergency fund? If you are employed, think three to six months of essential expenses. If you are self-employed or locum, think six months or more. Without a buffer, one crisis can force you to sell investments at the worst possible time.

Do you know what is coming in, what is going out, and what your surplus is each month? And are you learning enough to stay calm during the market dips that always come?

If you carry debt charging high interest, clearing it is often the first guaranteed return. Paying off expensive debt can outperform most investments, with zero risk.

If your income stops, what happens? Income protection and life cover, the basics. Because the biggest asset you own is your ability to earn.
